Stuart, FL-- Willie E. Gary, prominent attorney and Chairman of the Black Family Channel, and actor and children’s book author, Tommy Ford, celebrated Black History Month by reading to over 300 children at Myrtle Grove Elementary School in Opa-Locka, Florida on Friday, February 5, 2005. This event was part of the “Legends of Literacy” tour which traveled to numerous elementary and middle schools introducing children to African American authors of children’s books, and encouraging good reading habits.

Tommy Ford introduced the special guests during the “Legends of Literacy” event at Myrtle Grove Elementary School, including African American children’s authors Eloise Greenfield, Ashley Bryan and Jan Spivey Gilchrist. Gary and the featured authors read passages and poems from some of their well-known books. In many instances, the children helped bring the books to life by repeating phrases and acting out scenes. The literacy tour was developed with the goal of promoting literacy, increasing awareness of African American authors and helping students improve FCAT scores.

“Seeing these children get excited about reading and learning was a great thing,” said Gary. “I was very happy to be a part of this event which promotes literacy, and introduces kids to important African American authors who also serve as great role models.” Gary is noted for taking on some of America’s most powerful companies--winning billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. Gary is also the Chairman of the Black Family Channel, America’s only minority owned and operated, 24-hour cable network. Known for his philanthropic endeavors, he and his wife, Dr. Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities – including $10 million to his alma mater Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
