Stuart, FL-- Willie E. Gary, prominent attorney and Chairman of the Black Family Channel, recently served as the keynote speaker at the Johnson C. Smith University’s (JCSU) 2005 commencement ceremony in Charlotte, North Carolina. Gary motivated the graduates to continue to work hard, make a difference, and to “Dream Big Dreams.” Gary was also recognized for his many accomplishments with an honorary law degree which was presented to him during the commencement by Dr. Dorothy Cowser Yancy, President of Johnson C. Smith University.
Gary addressed nearly 6,000 attendees including JCSU graduates, faculty and family members during the commencement which was held at the Cricket Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina. Students listened intently as Gary spoke of his many challenges and how important it is to work hard, and learn to rise above difficult times.
“Striving to be successful is never easy. It is not luck, but hard work and determination that will help you reach your goals,” said Gary. “Hard work is what has gotten all of you to this important moment in your lives, and it will enable you to follow your dreams,” continued Gary.
Gary is noted for taking on some of America’s most powerful companies--winning billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. Gary is also the Chairman of the Black Family Channel, America’s only minority owned and operated, 24-hour cable network. Known for his philanthropic endeavors, he and his wife, Dr. Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities – including $10 million to his alma mater Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
