Stuart, FL-- Willie E. Gary, prominent attorney and Chairman of the Black Family Channel, recently served as the keynote speaker at the 13th Annual Senior Mwambo Ceremony at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. The Mwambo African tradition serves as a right of passage for Black seniors and marks their transition into advanced education and professional careers.

Gary addressed over 600 attendees including University of Miami graduates, Dr. Donna E. Shalala, President of the University of Miami, faculty and family members during the ceremony. The Senior Mwambo Ceremony was established by the Department of Multicultural Affairs in 1992, and recognizes Black students who are completing both graduate and undergraduate degrees. The Mwambo has four symbolic components which are represented in this ceremony: Food to nourish the body, music to invoke God and the ancestral spirits, water which represents the medium of life, and the kente cloth to symbolize African cultural identity. Gary was honored to participate in this tradition and recognized the students for their dedication and hard work, and urged them to contribute as community leaders and role models.

“Now that you have reached this pinnacle in your lives, it is time to be thankful and to reflect on those who helped you reach your goal of a higher education,” said Gary. “It is also a time to plan for the future and to find ways to contribute to your communities and serve as role models for boys and girls,” continued Gary.

Gary is noted for taking on some of America’s most powerful companies--winning billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. Gary is also the Chairman of the Black Family Channel, America’s only minority owned and operated, 24-hour cable network. Known for his philanthropic endeavors, he and his wife, Dr. Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities – including $10 million to his alma mater Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
