Stuart, FL-- Willie E. Gary, prominent attorney and chairman of the Black Family Channel, recently served as the keynote speaker for the “Say No to Drugs” Conference and Luncheon hosted by the 5,000 Role Models of Excellence in Homestead, Florida. Gary spoke to young minority men as part of a mentoring program, founded by Senator Frederica Wilson, which provides guidance and resources to help them achieve a college education.
Gary addressed over 1,000 students and faculty at the South Dade Senior High School in Homestead, Florida, in an attempt to encourage them to say no to drugs and to motivate them to excel in academics. Students listened intently as Gary spoke of his own challenges in life and how he was able to achieve his goals through hard work and determination. Other positive role models in the community spoke to the students to further encourage them to take the right path in life. At the conclusion of the event, the boys and girls signed a pledge promising to stay away from drugs. Mayor Roscoe Warren presented Gary with a key to the City of Homestead, Florida, in appreciation for his hard work and commitment to helping young people excel in school and achieve a higher education.
“I am committed to helping young people realize their true potential,” said Gary. “Every child deserves a great education and it is up to all of us, to be positive role models and to encourage boys and girls to be their very best,” continued Gary.
Gary, who is best known in legal circles for taking on some of America’s most powerful companies, winning billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements on behalf of his clients. Gary is also the Chairman of the Black Family Channel, America’s only minority owned and operated, 24-hour cable network. Known for his philanthropic endeavors, he and his wife, Dr. Gloria Gary, founded The Gary Foundation, which provides college scholarships to at-risk students who wish to attend college. The Gary’s have donated millions of dollars to help Historically Black Colleges and Universities including $10 million to his alma mater Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina.
