Held at the downtown Marriott Hotel in Kansas City, more than 400 attendees including State Senator Yvonne Wilson, Mayor Pro-Tempore Alvin Brooks, U.S. Representative Reverend Emanuel Cleaver II and others, gathered to hear Gary’s message on the topic of “Unity in our Community: Experience It” during the community luncheon. Boys and girls from area schools were also invited to attend the luncheon as part of the SCLC Youth Day. Gary met with the children and inspired them to set their goals high and strive for academic excellence. Gary spoke to attendees about the importance of contributing time, money and resources to benefit worthy causes. In addition, Gary emphasized the obligation to reach back and help the less fortunate.
“What matters most is not what you have done for yourselves; but what you have done to help the least of these. It is up to each of us assembled here today to heed the call of leadership and make a difference in the lives of the underserved and downtrodden,” said Gary. “By doing this, we honor the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the legacy he has left behind.”
